Overall Result
There were seats in the House of Representatives at this election. A party or coalition of parties needed to win seats to win the election and form government. This represents a majority (over 50%) of the available seats.
What happens when no party wins a majority of seats?
Find out the answer
If no party or coalition has won a majority of seats, we have a hung parliament. A group of parties that have collectively won a majority of seats must come together to form a minority government.
This occurred in the 2010 House of Representatives election. The Australian Labor party won 72 seats, the Liberal/National Party coalition won 73 seats, and minor parties and independents won 5 seats. The Australian Labor Party was able to successfully negotiate with four members in the group of minor party and independents to gain their support and form government.
